National Horizons Centre (NHC) Teeside
The requirement was to create a new learning and laboratory complex as part of the Central Park campus in Darlington.
Darlington is built upon its railway and engineering history. The proximity of the site to the adjacent railway celebrates this past and suggests the foundation upon which the future will be built. The National Horizons Centre is the future, it forms the chrysalis from which the technologically driven skills will drive the town and Teeside forwards.
The need to accommodate change in research laboratory space is critical to enable new equipment and procedures to be integrated. The building was planned to allow for these changing uses through the utilisation of lab modules, full height external and internal glazing to maximize daylight penetration, and internal views between spaces to create a pleasant working environment.
Grouping together space types such as administration, plant, and teaching creates flexibility and optimises the ability to service these areas.
