BUPA Cromwell CDU
The Cromwell Hospital CDU project sought to remodel, refurbish and upgrade the existing Chemotherapy Day Unit suit at the notable private London hospital, whilst keeping facilities live to ensure on going continuity of care and treatment to existing patients throughout the works.
Working with Hollywell Building Services, a contractor with whom we have a long-standing relationship, Wilson Mason provided executive architectural services, taking the RIBA Stage 3 tender design through to completion on site. We were responsible for the development of the detail, full coordination with existing and proposed servicing, integration of fire compliance reporting and a VE programme as well as fully developing the finishes in conjunction with the client team.
The developed and implemented design utilises joinery elements, telescopic doors, and curtains to provide private bed and chair bays within the CDU suite. The reception was reconfigured and opened to the waiting area to create a calm and welcoming entrance that provided access to both treatment rooms and the upgraded satellite pharmacy, an integral part of the unit. It is now a warm, welcoming environment that assists in the treatment programme and patient wellbeing by providing the required compliance for healthcare standards without appearing overtly clinical.
The major challenges of this project revolved around existing building conditions, integration of required fire compliance measures following site review and survey, ensuring that the stage 3 vision could be met whilst working with these building-based constraints.
