Newfield School Extension
Wilson Mason is thrilled to be working on the Newfield School expansion. It’s great to see this project progressing to planning, with approval expected in May 2025.
Newfield School is situated in the Shadsworth area of southeast Blackburn, near the Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital. The school, which is managed by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council, offers high-quality specialist education for children and young people aged 2-19 years. The school is located between Old Bank Lane and Shadsworth Road, both of which are primary routes in the area, providing access to the hospital and neighbouring residential areas.
Newfield School was established in September 2000, following the closure of two former special schools, Blackamoor and Dame Evelyn Fox. The name Newfield originates from its location on the former Newfield Farm site. Due to increased demand for SEN provision in the borough, a larger purposed-built special needs school building was constructed in 2006. In 2015, the Newfield site was further developed, and the former Crosshills School building was subsequently demolished to make way for the construction of the Newfield School for Autism. In 2018, Newfield School for Autism was opened to provide a specialist autism educational facility to cater to children with Autism. The complex needs building and the autism building were linked and provided on one overall site to create Newfield School.
Due to increasing demand in pupil numbers and the desire to improve the educational provision at Newfield School Blackburn, Wilson Mason were appointed by Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council as architect, PD CDM, PDBR and lead designer to explore options to extend the existing facilities of Newfield’s SEN School.
Once completed, the site based in Blackburn will support an additional sixty pupils who have special educational needs.
