BREEAM Excellence for Bury College

Bury College Health & Digital Centre has been awarded a BREEAM Excellent rating, ranking it in the top 10% of UK new non-domestic buildings for sustainability performance.

To achieve BREEAM Excellent and the Client’s aspirations for the building, the project team had to address a number of location and use specific challenges in meeting the BREEAM criteria. This resulted in the development of various bespoke design solutions to satisfy Client drivers and  BREEAM benchmarks, including:

  • Installation of full height brise soleil, high performance solar controlled glass, and solar reflective user controller blinds.

This reduced solar gain to the building and mitigated the demand upon the mechanical ventilation services installations. Achieving natural ventilation through openable windows was not possible due to the potential acoustic impact from the local transport network.

  • The use of robust and impact resistant material installations.

These were strategically placed in high risk and high use areas to reduce future damage and wear and tear. This provides a cost effective, durable and low maintenance design solution.

  • Incorporating swift and bat boxes into the brise soleil to support local wildlife and ecology.

This design solution integrated seamlessly with the bespoke manufactured fin arrangement.

Additional design consideration was made to deliver an open and welcoming aspect, in order to meet client requirements. This also had to meet BREEAM and Secured by Design criteria, which was achieved through:

  • discrete siting of access control points and shutters, they are not seen when the building is in use.
  • external fencing as a secure barrier and visual deterrent, in aesthetically considered arrangements from natural materials.
  • the use of strengthened and laminated impact resistant glass, to allow generous use of glazing in the building’s façade, enabling copious natural light and visual connectivity between outside and inside.
