Topping Out at the European Space Agency
The European Space Agency (ESA) ECSAT Connectivity Industry Day on the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus was the perfect event for the topping out ceremony of the new ESA ECSAT Conference Centre. The honour of unveiling the plaque fell to Josef Aschbacher (ESA Director General) and Dr. Mike Short (DIT Chief Scientific Adviser) representing the Government.
The conference centre will provide a 300 person sub divisible conference hall, interpreters booths, meeting rooms, break out facilities and separate café with construction completed towards the end of 2022.
An afternoon of speeches, presentations and demonstrations provided ample opportunity to observe the applications of the satellite and space technology around the ESA ECSAT site and was a real insight into the work our client does ‘as their day job’, whilst we have been working on the design and implementation of the Conference Centre project. A particular highlight being the autonomous robotic dogs who really stole the show.
A tour for the VIPs followed (including ESA, UK Space Agency, Harwell Campus through the Conference Centre) and the team were able to present the facilities that will be accessible on completion of the project, including standing within the 300 person conference hall that will be instrumental in continuing the close working relationships between the space technology and applications sector.
The ESA Estates and Facilities Management team at ECSAT co-ordinated a truly stellar day, and thanks to Amiri Construction for the organisation on site – which was positively sparking in the sunlight.
Wilson Mason LLP have been working with ESA since 2018 on this project and lead the client-side design team, retained as client advisory team through construction.
