The Coupland 3 project incorporates a number of conjoined developments including the Grade II listed Alfred Waterhouse Coupland, Pharmacy, and Schunck buildings which are located to the rear quadrangle of the historical cluster of University administrative buildings.
A detailed and continued dialogue with a local authority conservation department was required in order to refurbish the 14,000m2 building. It was imperative to balance the sensitive and significant nature of the buildings against the need to deliver contemporary and future proofed facilities.
The design addresses the collected buildings disparate arrangement and provides them with a contemporary circulation framework, including new entrances that re-establish the buildings as a centre for the delivery of contemporary higher education. A key aim for the upgrading and alteration of the buildings is to use minimal insertions, creating usable and sustainable spaces for current and medium term educational trends.
The initial design input has focused on analysis of the existing building fabric as well as collaboration with end users to establish departmental space allocation.
