Sustainable Supermarket, Scotforth
The design for the development maximised sustainable opportunities, providing a sympathetic response to the proposed urban setting on the edge of the City of Lancaster. The significant fall across the site was utilised to effectively bury the main body of the retail floor as well as the supporting back of house areas.
The impact of the development was further reduced through the proposed provision of green roofs. The use of a shallow barrel vault roof further reduced the impact of the first-floor accommodation where the offices and tea shop bistro are located.
By harvesting the waste heat from the refrigeration compressors, under floor heating was possible in the main retail area. To again maximise the use of available energy, insulation was increased in the mostly windowless main floor of the supermarket.
