The design addresses the sloping split site fronting on to a busy main road by planning the building over two floors with ancillary offices and warehousing above the sales floor, and parking on the site opposite the new store.
Booths had been looking for a suitable site to build a new food store in Barrowford for some time. The site chosen for the scheme is located on the edge of a conservation area. The design adopts a traditional mill building aesthetic using natural stone that is recycled from the existing mill where possible.
As part of an extensive consultation process, a public exhibition was held over two days to inform people about the proposals and to invite comment and feedback. This included the use of a video ‘walk through’ to show the building in its context.
