The reconfiguration and refurbishment of the Grade II listed building, was proposed to form a new conference centre and events venue. The existing building consisted of three accommodation floors, as well as a basement for storage and plant space.
The design improved the existing building legibility, simplifying circulation and creating small and large meeting spaces for academic, corporate and social activities. A key aspect of the brief was addressing legacy inclusivity issues to ensure all building users and visitors were offered the same experience.
Working with the site topography, a large below ground conference facility was proposed. This subterranean approach avoided adversely affecting the setting of the listed building whilst increasing the opportunity for larger events and conferences. Exploiting the site topography allowed for views across the Lake District from within the below ground conference facility.
The design also improved the reception area to not only provide a welcoming space to meet and greet, but also to provide space for smaller scale functions.
