The project was won as part of a limited competition entered on behalf of RoadChef. The competition was for the master-planning of the site and the design of the buildings within it. The practice was then appointed by Midland Expressway Ltd to act as design and construction consultant throughout the building process.

The site is laid out to an overall curvi-linear geometry which runs from the main building grouping into the landscaping and roadways. The focal point of the site is the Amenity building which provides 2500m² of restaurant, shop and toilets, which is linked to a Travel Lodge and Conference facility. The Amenity building features a 3 dimensional curved sculptured roof and a tension rod suspension system to limit structural member sizes and roof depth to the amenity building main dining hall.
