The project is part of the strategy of Danish furniture retailer ILVA to build a number of high quality stores within the UK. The store redevelopment follows the existing Danish model, of large format, spacious, retail accommodation on two levels with large areas of structural glazing, and extensive use of natural materials such as basalt and timber.

The Gateshead site is within the Metrocentre Retail Park and the new retail accommodation is within the former M&S Lifestore and adjacent units providing a total of 12,500 sq m of retail and supporting accommodation.

The refurbishment includes remodelling of the south and east elevations, a top-lit atrium reception area, glass feature lifts and escalators, stainless steel and glass staircases and stone and natural timber flooring. Modifications to the exterior include modifications to provide fully accessible pedestrian and car parking areas.
