Lancaster Library

The design approach provides an open plan area within a refurbished, redundant cellular office space of the student library, which both acknowledges and enables differing student study habits.

The furniture within any library is a key component contributing to the overall ambience of a space, influencing behavior and study preferences. The proposal incorporates bespoke furniture items which are an adaptation of traditional library furniture. Elements of these furniture items have been simplified to suit a more contemporary space, whilst also retaining key design principals.

The use of solid oak material for the desks and the employment of traditional construction techniques reflect the grandeur and presence that is associated with the stature of a Library. The furniture will also compliment any future refurbishment.

The Library remained operational throughout the refurbishment period with minimal disruption to existing building occupants.
