This project saw the Confucius Institute at The Roundhouse undergo a vast refurbishment to deliver a contemporary hub for Chinese activities, to be enjoyed by university staff, students and external partners. The focus of this project was to create a variety of work spaces to promote collaborative study and encourage a number of interaction and engagement opportunities, as well as providing a comfortable and relaxing social environment.
Both floors have been artistically redesigned; the ground floor has been transformed into a spacious open planned area fitted with seating for students to study, as well as a welcoming area for hosting visitors and events. The upper floor has also been redesigned, transforming what was once a dark collection of windowless TV studios, into a bright open suite of seminar classrooms.
The building is now equipped to welcome visiting academics from China, and provides a vibrant space designed to promote learning and engagement with Chinese language and culture, imperative for the growth of the Institute within the University and Community.
A key aspect to achieve in this project was to maximise natural light and ventilation, and overall improve the sustainability of the building, whilst generating a pleasant study environment. This has been achieved through the installation of large windows on the first floor, linked with improvements to building insulation and airtightness.
